Dreaming about travelling in Denmark?

That year was a very quiet travel year for our little family. At the time, I was affected by illness and couldn’t travel abroad. Due to pain in one of my legs, we also weren’t able to get very far around Danish towns – or, for that matter, out into nature. Instead, 2022 became the year when micro-adventures took center stage, including a few lovely trips within Denmark. Among other things, we made a quick visit to Fjerritslev, where we had lunch at Svinkløv Badehotel – and, as you can read here, a summery little trip to Sæby. Summer in Sæby The trip to Sæby was actually a gift for my mom, because she had helped us when I was at my sickest. My mom is from Sæby, and together with her, we took a stroll down “memory lane,” where she recalled and shared stories about her childhood in Sæby. For me, it was also a trip to the vacation town of my own childhood, as I often visited my grandparents here as a child. As so often before, we started our city experience at the harbor. Whenever we are at the town’s harbor, we always get a good sense of the town’s origin and location. This time, it was also because we had invited my mom to lunch at the fish restaurant Jacobs Fiskerestaurant. Beautiful fishing boat in Sæby Harbor The dream was to experience the town bathed in sunlight and to be reminded of how beautiful and delightful Denmark can be on a warm summer’s day. With fresh fish from the harbor and the scent of salt in the air, we explored Sæby through its most charming neighborhood. Sæby, as I experience it, is divided into several parts, but this trip focused solely on the harbor and the old town. The town center has changed a lot since I was a child, and I remember it as cozier than I find it today. This blog post, therefore, is about the old town, which I find the most fascinating, beautiful, and inviting. The old town is known for its beautiful, historic houses dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. Most of the houses are painted in pastel colors, creating a wonderfully charming atmosphere in the area. The small, winding streets and paths lead you through the neighborhood, where you can experience the authentic charm of North Jutland. Just look at this: The houses in Sæby are so beautiful. You can enjoy a traditional North Jutland lunch or dinner with local dishes inspired by the sea and the North Jutland landscape. We treated ourselves to a delicious fish buffet at the harbor and later enjoyed ice cream and a cup of coffee in the cozy courtyard of Snedkergaarden. The courtyard at Snedkergaarden Ice Cream Café in Sæby It is also in Sæby’s old town that you’ll find many small, charming shops and specialty stores, where you can buy local delicacies and unique handicrafts. For example, you can step right in from the street and watch the creation of beautiful glass art in the glassblowing studio. Sæby Church One of the most popular sights in Sæby’s old town is Sæby Church. Sæby Church is a beautiful Renaissance church built in 1550, known for its exquisite carvings and colorful windows. It’s a place where you can take a deep breath and experience the authentic charm and history of North Jutland. We ourselves were captivated by the old town’s beauty and charm, and yes – a summer trip to Sæby is always worth a visit and an adventure. Can you stay overnight in Sæby? There are many accommodation options in Sæby. Here are some of the most popular: Hotels: There aren’t many, but you can find a few hotels in Sæby offering comfortable rooms with modern amenities. Some also have an on-site restaurant and bar. Bed & Breakfasts: There is also a selection of Bed & Breakfasts in Sæby. Holiday Apartments: Sæby has a wide range of holiday apartments, suitable for anything from a single person to a larger group. Most apartments have a fully equipped kitchen, so you can prepare your own meals. Campsites: For those who prefer camping, there is also a campsite near Sæby where you can rent a spot for your caravan or tent. No matter what type of accommodation you choose, you’ll be able to enjoy Sæby and the surrounding areas. There is something for everyone.
