Here’s our review of Spar Hotel Majorna, located in Gothenburg, Sweden. The hotel is within walking distance when you arrive by ferry from Frederikshavn, close to the harbor and a bit south of the city center. The hotel is a quiet and peaceful establishment, solid and perfect for an overnight stay – or two.

We arrived with the early Stena Line ferry on Saturday, around noon. The weather was fantastic, and we chose to make the most of our short weekend trip by walking up to the hotel.

The Room

We checked in and explored our new territory in the room. We had been allocated a triple room with two beds and a wall bed for Sebastian, which could be folded out. The room wasn’t very large, but because the third bed was folded against the wall, we had enough space to move around during the day.

The room faced away from the street and was very quiet. Even when we opened the window, there was a tranquility about the place that we appreciated. There were sounds and voices from the city, but no noise.

The room was very bright, probably because we were accommodated on the 5th floor. Even though we were on the 5th floor, there was plenty of greenery to look at when we glanced out.

The room had everything it needed to function practically. Even hooks where we could hang our clothes (unfortunately, a big rarity in many of even the best hotels we’ve stayed at).

The Breakfast Buffet

Our stay at Spar Hotel Majorna included a breakfast buffet. Breakfast buffets can be a nice option, but sometimes we actually opt out of them, especially if we’re staying in an area for a longer period. In those cases, we often prefer to explore the local cafes or breakfast options in the area.

For this occasion, where we were only staying in Gothenburg for one night, it was a welcome opportunity for us to have breakfast at the hotel and then set out to explore the city afterwards.

The breakfast buffet had everything we could expect from a breakfast buffet. Muesli, cornflakes, bread, cheese and cold cuts, jams, eggs, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages, pancakes, cookies, juice, squash, tea, and coffee ad libitum… and then the Swedish specialties: crispbread, herring, and “Kalles” (tube caviar).

Our Review

We were pleasantly surprised by the peace and quiet we experienced as a family at the hotel. It was simple, clean, tidy, and everything worked well. We enjoyed the location as we discovered places we had never visited before during our walks around the city. Among them was Haga – the lively district in Gothenburg, where we found many charming shops and cafes.
