Many naturist destinations in Europe are family-friendly, where children can play freely and safely in natural surroundings. But how do you approach it in a way that feels natural and comfortable for both children and adults? In this guide, you’ll find tips for planning a successful naturist holiday with children. Why go on a naturist holiday with children? Naturism can be practiced in many ways. For me, it’s about having the freedom to choose not to wear clothes when it’s warm and to enjoy the sense of freedom that comes with it. For others, it may be almost a religion. For many naturist families, it’s not just about being naked – it’s about freedom, body positivity, and a relaxed approach to life. What can naturist holidays offer children? A healthy relationship with their bodies – Children learn early on that all bodies are different and natural. A safe and free upbringing – Naturist places are often peaceful, family-friendly, and less focused on material things than many mainstream destinations tend to be. A close connection to nature – Many naturist campsites and resorts are located in beautiful natural surroundings where children can play freely. Respect children’s boundaries and their terms When choosing a naturist holiday as a family, it’s important to remember that children have their own boundaries and needs. They should never be pressured, and it should always be clear that they are allowed to say no – both to visiting naturist beaches and to being naked in shared spaces. It’s about safety and freedom – not obligation. For us, it has always been simple: if our child does not want to go on a naturist holiday or visit a naturist beach with us, then we don’t go. You can always ask about the reason. Perhaps the child does not want to be naked but is perfectly fine with you being so. We also appreciate that the naturist places we visit as a family are family-oriented. For example, our favorite naturist campsite on Corsica writes the following about their “naturist dress code”: “At the naturist holiday resort of Bagheera, we wish to encourage the practice of family orientated, natural, healthy naturism. To do this, we ask that you respect the nudity code and, at the same time, show understanding towards the young and those who may be apprehensive of discovering naturism.” This is something we truly value – respect for others’ boundaries and the freedom to choose or opt out of naturism. Naturism is an individual and personal choice. Benefits of going on a naturist holiday with children A naturist holiday can give children experiences and values they carry with them far into life. When the clothes come off, many of everyday expectations and norms often fall away too – creating space for a more relaxed and natural way of being together as a family. A natural relationship with the body When children are allowed to experience nudity, such as on a naturist holiday, they naturally and calmly learn that bodies come in all shapes and sizes – and that this is completely normal. Nothing needs to be hidden or perfect. This can give them strength and confidence in their own bodies, something many children today struggle to find in a world filled with ideals and constant comparison on social media. Less focus on consumption and appearance Without clothes, there is no pressure to wear the “right” outfit. No expensive swimsuits, no comparison of brands or trends. It creates breathing space where children can simply be children – without having to compare what they or others are wearing. Stronger family connections When the whole family is unclothed, everyone is more equal – and that can create a special sense of togetherness. Many families find that conversations become more honest and presence more genuine when the outer layers are set aside. Freedom and connection with nature Naturist resorts and beaches are often located in beautiful natural surroundings with plenty of space and tranquility. This allows children to run, play, and explore without restrictions. There is something truly special about swimming naked in the sea, building sandcastles, or playing ball without a wet swimsuit rubbing against your skin. A safe and respectful environment Naturist communities are often characterized by a strong culture of respect – for bodies, boundaries, and privacy. Children are met with kindness and openness, and they learn that nudity is not about sexuality, but about freedom and authenticity. How do you introduce children to naturism? If you and your family already practice naturism at home, transitioning to a naturist holiday will feel natural. If it’s your first time, it can be a good idea to take small steps: Talk openly about it – Explain to your children that there are places where people enjoy being naked together, and that it’s completely natural. Start at home – If your children are not used to nudity at home, try being naked in private surroundings, such as in the garden or at a quiet beach. Show pictures from the destination – Many naturist resorts have family photos on their websites, so children can see that it’s perfectly normal. Create excitement – Tell them about the fun activities they can look forward to, such as beach trips, swimming, and playing in nature. What should you pack for a naturist holiday with children? Even though clothing isn’t needed most of the time, there are still important things to pack: Sunscreen – Children’s skin is sensitive, so choose a sunscreen with a high SPF, at least 30 according to according to general health recommendations. We would recommend an even higher SPF for children, and make sure to reapply frequently. Water shoes – Many naturist beaches have rocks or stones. Sun hat and sunglasses – Especially important for younger children. Water and snacks – Naturist places are often located a bit off the beaten path, so bring provisions. Some clothes for the evenings – When the sun goes down, it can get chilly. Flip-flops or sandals – Very practical for the beach. The sand can become extremely hot in the sun, and the ground may be uneven. They are easy to slip on and off and protect little feet on the way to and from the water. How do you handle other people’s reactions? If you travel with children as a naturist, you may encounter questions from others – especially from people who are unfamiliar with naturism. Here are some helpful responses: ❓ “Isn’t it strange to take children on a naturist holiday?”👉 Naturism is about freedom and body positivity. At many naturist resorts and beaches, families are completely normal and just as common as they are on textile beaches. ❓ “What if someone stares?”👉 Naturist places have clear rules about respect and behavior, and staring is not tolerated. This is something the community takes seriously and cares deeply about. Photography is also not allowed at naturist resorts and beaches, which helps protect everyone’s privacy. ❓ “How do you know it’s safe for children?”👉 Naturist resorts and beaches often have a strong focus on safety, and the atmosphere is typically family-friendly and inclusive. Conclusion: A natural and safe way to travel A naturist holiday with children does not have to be strange or complicated – quite the opposite. It can be a deeply relaxed, safe, and present way to spend time together as a family. When nudity becomes something natural rather than something exceptional, much of the pressure and expectation that can otherwise affect both children and adults simply fades away.
